Trade deals tempt India to expand fishing

This is what happens when big nations sign big trade deals. After concluding free trade agreements with the European Union and the United States of America, India now plans to massively ramp up its fisheries budget in order to export more fish.

This can be seen as a continuation of colonial relations: Western markets demand more fish, and developing countries must supply the raw materials.

Traditional fisheries in India are alarmed, as they rightly fear that more money from the Indian government could open up Indian fish stocks to industrial fleets, which would be at the expense of small-scale fisheries and consequently destroy the livelihoods of tens of thousands of local fishermen, as large fishing vessels require far fewer workers.
