Everyday madness from the fish’s perspective

The Mackerel stock in the north-east Atlantic have been so severely depleted that ICES advices a 70% cut in fishing quota [1]— it would be a miracle if EU fisheries ministers were to follow this advice… A study led by fisheries biologist Rainer Froese (University of Kiel) accuses the EU of ‚gross mismanagement‘ in the protection of fish stocks, particularly cod and herring. According to Froese, ‚whatever can be done wrong is done wrong‘ [2]. Urgent political action is also needed to prevent the collapse of British fish stocks, the NGO Oceana warns [3].

Salmons à gogo…
#1 – Chile: ‘We can be proud of what this industry has built,’ says the CEO of the Chilean Salmon Council, pointing to a growth of 4,000 per cent since the early 1990s. However, he admits that ‘the initial growth was often unruly and unregulated, leading to environmental damage and culminating in an ISA virus crisis from 2007 to 2010’, after which ‘the public system worked together with the industry to be able to regulate it, and today, it has become an overregulation’. Hard to believe, though, because why else criticism environmental organisations still continues?
More…#2 – Iceland: Trouble at the election of a new board member of Kaldvik, one of the leading salmon farming companies in Iceland. The designated candidate, the former CEO of the Norwegian Seafood Council, was opposed by an Icelandic property, investment and fisheries expert, who lost the election however.
More…#3 – Norway: Salmon farming is blamed for the rapid decline of wild Atlantic salmon stocks. Now, the Norwegian Environment Agency appears to have found a reason in addition: illegal fishing with nets along the country’s coast, especially in the north. ‘If you fish in the sea on these weak populations, the consequences can be serious,’ said the agency’s spokesperson [3], thus indirectly admitting that there is a pre-existing cause. However, the root cause is the ever-increasing salmon frenzy in Western markets, more of the same, more of the same…
More…#4 – Scotland: The salmon frenzy continues, and so does Don Staniford, unyielding. The anti-salmon farming campaigner has been judicially banned from approaching the farms of large companies such as Mowi and Scottish Sea Farms. Now he is protesting in front of the farms.

#1: Salmon farming opponent loses court case
Scottish activist Don Staniford had been forbidden to approach Scottish farming sites of Mowi, the world’s biggest salmon farming company; we reported on it in November 2023 [1]. To be able to continue his investigations on what really happens in industrial salmon farming, Staniford had appealed to the local court which recently followed Mowi’s claim that Staniford has no right to “board, enter onto, physically occupy, attach himself or vessels to all structures, docks, walkways, buildings, floats or pens of Mowi sites” or to “instruct others to act in his place”.

Staniford is not known to give in. Currently he is considering to appeal to the next instance.

Crazy fish news

A million salmons killed due to a jellyfish attack
In a SalMar farming site in Norway, 1.2 million young salmons had to be killed “for fish welfare reasons” after string jellyfishes (Apolemia uvaria) had invaded the net cages and began to damage or kill the fishes.
More about it…The Mackerel war continues
After the Scottish fishermen, it’s now up to their Irish colleagues to pretend that Iceland, Faroese and Norway are catching too high share after mackerel stock in the north east Atlantic. It’s kind of a dead end debate between the ones who tried to protect their long ago acquired rights and the ones who profit from the fact that meanwhile the mackerels are swimming higher up north, due to global warming.

Background information (in German)Thailand plans to withdraw some of its fisheries reforms
The Thai fisheries industry has long been accused for several harmful practices, like a illegal fishing (IUU), violation of the labour rights, lack in quality, etc. Negative press and phase-out of big retailers in the west urged the Thai government to implement reforms some years ago. The government’s planed roll-back is driven by complaints of fishermen that strict IUU rules were threatening their livelihoods. A broad coalition of international and Thai NGOs urge the government to stick to the reforms.
