Animals choose freedom

When farmed salmons have the chance to escape from their net pens, they inevitably do so, in their thousands. Even if they have been well fed and have never lived in the wild, they run away. It is in their nature.

You’ve all read stories about a calf or a pig breaking out of a slaughterhouse lorry to escape.
Now there’s a new story about a stampede of 50 bulls in Friuli, Italy. Startled by fireworks in the neighbourhood, they tore down the fence and vanished into the wilderness. It took days to track them down, anaesthetise them, and bring them home. Home? Not really, when you consider that they could decide for themselves where they’d like to live.

And what about ourselves? Why do we humans allow ourselves to be confined to jobs and homes that we would never want if we were free to choose? Sometimes I suspect that we accept the confinement of animals because we accept being confined ourselves.
