Montevideo, 01/04/2026. The World Aquaculture Society (WAS) decided to-day, following intensive negotiations facilitated by Uruguay and out of concern for fish welfare and the industry’s reputation, to impose a moratorium on all new fish farming facilities.
In future, the WAS intends to approve only those fish species and facilities that have been endorsed by think.fish. Existing facilities will be subject to a 20-year transition period.
